Detail Heavy Hot Tub Deck with Roof System

This project centered around creating a functional and cohesive deck system that tied together three exterior doors at the back of the house. The client’s main goal was to feature the hot tub in this outdoor space, with the deck wrapping around the tub and the finished deck surface aligning with the tub’s rim.

To support the new deck layout, we poured a concrete slab for the hot tub, positioning it slightly farther from the house to create more usable space. To keep the lower deck dry, we fabricated a custom drainage system beneath the upper deck. Corrugated metal roofing was fastened to the underside of the upper deck framing, pitched toward a new gutter system. Since the hot tub now sat beyond the shelter of the upper deck, we also extended the roofline to cover it, integrating it with the new drainage system.

We installed a flagstone walkway that tied the new deck into the rest of the backyard. A clean connection had to be made between multiple elevations: the flagstone path, the railroad tie steps, and the new deck staircase. We also navigated a large concrete footing that interfered with our stair landing. To solve this, we carved out the underside of a 2×12 stringer and flat-blocked it, allowing the framing to span the obstacle securely.

We used a contrasting color of decking to create a picture-frame border around the deck edges and stairs. Custom cedar handrails and guards brought warmth and texture to the space, and grip tape was added to the boards around the tub and on the stairs for safety.

This deck was packed with thoughtful details and functional solutions that brought the client’s vision to life.
